Spain\u2019s Pedro Sanchez has called for the suspension of a trade agreement with West Jerusalem over the war in Gaza<\/strong><\/p>\n

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has accused the EU of double standards, noting that the bloc imposed sweeping sanctions on Russia over the Ukraine conflict but has failed to take similar action against Israel for its war in Gaza.<\/p>\n

Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Sanchez said he will propose suspending the EU\u2019s trade agreement with Israel, in which Article 2 designates human rights as an \u201cessential element\u201d<\/em> of the pact.<\/p>\n

He noted that UN reports are sounding the alarm over the \u201ccatastrophic situation\u201d<\/em> in Gaza, where more than 56,000 Palestinians have been killed since October 2023.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt makes absolutely no sense that we\u2019ve imposed 18 rounds of sanctions on Russia for its aggression against Ukraine, while the EU, in a double standard, has been unable to suspend the association agreement with Israel, even as it flagrantly violates Article 2 on human rights,\u201d<\/em> Sanchez said.<\/p>\n

The Israeli Embassy in Madrid condemned Sanchez\u2019s remarks as \u201cmorally indefensible\u201d<\/em> and accused him of \u201claunching an anti-Israel crusade.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cIsrael, a democratic country facing existential threats on multiple fronts, has both the right and the duty to defend its citizens,\u201d<\/em> the embassy said in a statement on X.<\/p>\n

In response, the Spanish Foreign Ministry summoned the Israeli envoy over the embassy\u2019s \u201cunacceptable\u201d<\/em> comments.<\/p>\n

Israel launched its operation in Gaza following a surprise attack on October 7, 2023, in which Hamas and allied Palestinian groups killed around 1,200 people and took more than 200 hostages.
