Tehran must not withdraw from the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, President Emmanuel Macron has said<\/strong><\/p>\n French President Emmanuel Macron has said the international community must act to prevent Iran from leaving the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), which prohibits it from acquiring nuclear weapons.<\/p>\n Some Iranian politicians have threatened to withdraw from the NPT in retaliation for recent US and Israeli strikes on the country\u2019s nuclear facilities.<\/p>\n While Macron\u00a0argued that the strikes were \u201cgenuinely effective,\u201d<\/em> he cautioned that the\u00a0worst-case scenario\u00a0would be Iran pulling out of the landmark arms control treaty.<\/p>\n \u201cThe worst would be that the consequence of this is Iran\u2019s exit from the Non-Proliferation Treaty and therefore, ultimately, a drift and a collective weakening,\u201d<\/em> Macron told reporters after an EU summit in Brussels on Thursday.<\/p>\n \u201cOur hope is for a genuine convergence of views, as the objective\u2026 is to prevent the resumption of [Iran\u2019s] proliferation activities,\u201d<\/em> he added.<\/p>\n Macron said France plans to hold consultations with the other four permanent members of the UN Security Council\u00a0\u2013 the US, UK, Russia, and China\u00a0\u2013 in the coming days. He noted that he has briefed US President Donald Trump on France\u2019s recent communications with Tehran.<\/p>\n
