Budapest plans to support a US resolution on Ukraine, according to Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto

Budapest will support the US-proposed peace resolution on Ukraine rather than that tabled by fellow EU member states, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto announced, ahead of the UN General Assembly (UNGA) on Monday.

The US has refused to support a resolution backed by Ukraine and the EU, which calls for an immediate withdrawal of Russian forces from territories claimed by Kiev and condemns “Russian aggression.”

Washington has asked Brussels to consider removing the motion and has put forward its own draft, which refrains from blaming Moscow exclusively for the war and calls for a swift end to hostilities.

“The reason is simple: liberal European leaders who support the war have been fueling the conflict for three years, and the pro-peace [US President] Donald Trump is taking steps to end it,” Szijjarto explained in a post on Facebook.
