Lee Hsien Loong urged the nation to implement new strategies as the US reassesses its global role<\/strong><\/p>\n Singapore must adjust to a far less predictable world where the US is no longer willing to \u201cunderwrite the global order,\u201d<\/em> Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong has said.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n Speaking at a Chinese New Year celebration dinner on Saturday, Lee, who served as prime minister from 2004 to 2024, described the current geopolitical situation as \u201ctense as ever\u201d<\/em> with \u201cmuch uncertainty.\u201d<\/em> He attributed this to Washington shifting its focus to domestic challenges and reassessing its international commitments.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n The minister argued that the US \u201ctakes a transactional approach to achieve immediate objectives,\u201d<\/em> adding that the White House views tariffs as a key policy instrument, a source of external revenue, and a means to pressure other nations into making concessions.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n \u201cThe US is no longer prepared to underwrite the global order. This makes the international environment far less orderly and predictable,\u201d<\/em> he said, as quoted by Channel News Asia (CNA). He pointed to the Trump administration\u2019s decisions to withdraw from the World Health Organization and the Paris Agreement on Climate Change.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
